Elaine Burke

Elaine Burke (born 1971, Oldham, UK) now based in Northern Ireland. Having recently completed an MA in Fine Art, Elaine’s research led practice is centred around the female body and its agency, at once exploring lived experience, motherhood and memory. She is interested in ideas of latent associations of materials, connections across time and the giving and receiving of care. Working in a variety of media she explores connection with the past and repetition over time. In recent work she has been using stitching as a process to embed time within drawings, presenting ‘artefacts’ which document shared female experience. Drawing is key to a practice which often circles back to large scale figurative works in charcoal. In addressing ideas of care and women’s relationship to society. Elaine’s work is quietly political and deals with issues that can be deeply emotional.
