A Room of One’s Own
Individually-funded, solo residencies for women and non-binary artists.
Applications Close on 31st May 2022.
A Room of One's Own is a week-long, flexible residency designed to give artists the time and space they need to focus on developing their professional practice. This residency was created in response to the lack of opportunities for women and non-binary artists particularly those who are mothers or have caring responsibilities, to access traditional residency programmes. With many artists in our community working from home due to the lack of affordable and child-friendly studio spaces, we hear time and again of their urgent need for dedicated time and space to focus on their work.
The short term, flexible and parent-friendly nature of our residencies allow artists to create a residency model that works for them. It offers the opportunity to reflect, research or develop work within our bright, warm and welcoming space in Edinburgh. Whether you need a block of dedicated time to yourself in the studio to focus on your work uninterrupted, or you would like to bring children/family members to work alongside you or support you, we will work on an individual basis to tailor the program to your needs.
A Room of One’s Own is an independently funded programme for artists who already have their own funding in place to cover the costs of their residency. We can support artists with funding applications by providing an official letter of acceptance, and can support the marketing of crowdfunding campaigns.
As part of the application process, we will ask you to outline some residency goals however there is no pressure to produce a finished outcome during your residency and we do not ask for an end of project report or evaluation. All artists in residence are given the opportunity to engage with our community whether through a social media takeover, online artist talk or workshop, however this is not a condition of residency. The purpose of the residency is to give you the space and support you need to delve deeper into your practice, take risks and reflect on your work. All artists in residence will be invited to take part in an online crit session with Spilt Milk members during their residency.
We are now accepting applications for solo residencies of one week to take place in July and August 2022. We will also accept proposals for a collaborative residency with two artists who wish to work together.
Residencies will normally start on a Monday and end on a Saturday. The cost is £250 per week. Spilt Milk can support an independent funding application with an official letter of invitation and can offer advice on where to look for funding depending on the artist's location.
