Call for Board Members - deadline extended - Sept 10th

Spilt Milk Gallery CIC is a social enterprise based in Edinburgh. We promote equality in the arts through our dedicated international membership network for artists who identify as mothers, and we empower mothers in our local community through artist-led creative activities.

Founded in March 2018, to date our membership network has welcomed over 200 international artists who are mothers at various stages of their careers, working across painting, installation, photography, textiles, performance, poetry and socially engaged practices. We promote the work of our members on our online gallery, through our social media channels, through partnerships and collaborations, and with pop-up events and exhibitions including our annual members show which takes place in Edinburgh each Autumn. We are committed to reducing the barriers faced by mothers in the arts by providing tailored opportunities which are accessible to artists with caring responsibilities.

As well as advocating for, and creating opportunities for mothers who are artists, we are passionate about providing accessible creative opportunities to all mothers in the community. Over the past two years we have delivered a number of childcare supported, creative projects and workshops with mothers in Edinburgh. These have included partnerships with Dr Bell's Family Centre, Citizen Curator, Homestart Leith and North Edinburgh and Stepping Stones North Edinburgh.

Becoming a board member is an excellent opportunity to support our Founding Director, Lauren McLaughlin to build upon and expand the work of Spilt Milk during a time when amplifying the voices of mothers has never been more important.

We are looking to recruit a diverse board. You do not have to identify as a mother to apply but we welcome those who identify as parents/carers and we encourage applicants from BAME backgrounds, people who identify as disabled, people from the LGBTQ+ community, young people, older people, students, and those from working-class backgrounds.

Board members would be required to attend around 5-6 board meetings per year taking place in Edinburgh as well as to contribute your skills and experience in one working aspect of Spilt Milk.  Board meetings will take place in Edinburgh, however we will be flexible to accommodate all members and remote attendance will be possible.

This is a voluntary role however reasonable expenses will be covered.

We are particularly looking for people who can bring the following skills or experience to the team:

  • Business development skills particularly sales, marketing and e-commerce to help Spilt Milk maximise our income potential.

  • Experience of finance and fundraising in the social enterprise or charity sector.

  • Experience of curating exhibitions / events management.

  • Experience of working with mothers in a community setting.

To apply, please send either a short written statement, or a video of yourself outlining the relative skills and experience you can bring, and why you want to be a board member.

Send your application to Lauren info@spiltmilkgallery.com by September 10th.
