My current practice addresses issues relating to the marginalized and oppressed, specifically that of women within our society. I draw inspiration from the lives of women past, present and future. The work speaks about both internal and external repression and the power of the unconscious against everyday life and society. My work has been exploring themes around existentialist thought for a number of years now. I look at ideas relating to nothingness, loss, the burden of endless choice and transience. In addition, I am increasingly exploring the socio-historical construction of motherhood.

Mostly, I try to unearth and sit with all that has been left unsaid for swathes of generations of women. I wonder what this generational trauma might have done to the psyche of women - to live with this kind of repression by forces outside of one’s control, made up by the prevailing powers and systems that humankind has come through so far - Church, State, Capitalism, Patriarchy.

What has all of this meant for the inner workings and consciousness of women’s hearts, minds and their lives? How much has been left unsaid by them, unexpressed? How much life and creativity have we lost throughout our human histories by women because of these powers? I feel compelled to highlight these emotional states of being. When I look at images of women from a different era, whether in paintings or photography, I feel I can communicate with something more than what is being shown and presented. In my life, with my friends and family, I sometimes feel this unexpressed weight. I try to read between the lines of history and expression - to understand the soul and the person. I imagine what she is thinking, what she is experiencing and what she is going through. This continually renews my faith in creativity and art and the power it has to communicate.

Is there a way to atone for these lost lives ? I don't know. In my own life now and through my art practice I try to speak my truth as best as I can. On all levels, I strive to advocate for and seek gender equity. This impacts my role as an artist and also my role as a mother to my daughter and my son. Some of this starts with grieving and healing from what we have come through. We must know this before we can forgive. This history has impacted all of us negatively and not just women either, but also men, albeit in different ways. My desire is for my work to evolve and my narrative to change and grow as we come through what I hope to be a pivotal time of healing for humanity.
