What to expect when your expecting

acrylic on canvas, 80 x 100cm.

£2750

"What to expect when your expecting" was created during my first trimester of pregnancy. It was an unexpected pregnancy in a very new relationship and I also live in a different country to where I grew up. I remember being flooded with advice and feeling really resentful. Someone gave me the well known baby book "What to expect when your expecting" I remeber eagerly trying to consume as much of the pregnancy literature as possible, however, I realised it was not interesting and it made me feel worse. I have drawn these figures "Fly girls" throughout my artistic practice, this painting represents a shift in my practice as there is an abstract background shining through, representing the total unknown of my future and its the first time I painted my baby, present and kicking around in my womb. I decided shortly after this anxious afternoon tired, pregnant and nauseous in bed to focus on what felt intuitive and good for me which happened to be, as it always had been, painting.
