The word 'hiatus' derives from the latin word - hiare: "to gape, to yawn". I have been moving this word around my head, my tongue. I have been thinking a lot about the way in which the necessary visibility of violence - in the media, in our lives, in our environment - speaks to this idea of a hiatus - a temporary, gaping disruption from the status quo of concealed violence. This hiatus - this visibility - provides possibility for change, the hope of transformation. And it implicates more violence on the part of those already wounded, hurt, oppressed, violated. So often the space that opens quickly becomes both hollow and exposing: what is left feels grubby, scarring. We cannot get clean and smooth again. We can never go back. And yet. In anatomy. the hiatus aorta allows the aorta, our largest artery to pass through the diaphragm. Our bodies will starve of oxygen without it.
